There is no specific way that it works. Sometimes people undertake
similar projects without knowing it, but once you've already gotten the
money and half of it done you aren't going to give it all back are you?
And often things that seem similar are really not as similar. A state
fishes book often has a different focus than one on a specific drainage.
I'd much rather have two books with a different focus on a similar area
than only one.

Some people are, there are jobs that are totally teaching orientated, some
are primarily teaching with a little research and other that are primarily
research with some teaching. And all of them teach essentially the same
type of courses-in-the undergraduate level. At the research level, books
don't always count for very much (but that depends on your position and
institution).
