Several years ago, Jim Grady (UNO), Joe Quattro (USC) and I did some
genetic analyses comparing populations of banded killifish with the
killifish in Lakes Waccamw and Phelps. The populations in the 2 lakes
superficially resemble each other morphologically. It didn't come as a
big surprise that the Lake Waccamaw killies were most closely related to
banded killifish from the Waccamaw River while the Lake Phelps killies
were most closely related to banded killies from the adjacent Albemarle
Sound. The 2 lake populations were not closely related to each other.
Thus, in our opinion, the Lake Phelps form represents an undescribed
species.
