I can't speak-in-all for Arkansas or Mississippi regarding the juvenile
bowfin. You will miss most Oklahoma bowfin range following the route
you mentioned, which sounds like I-40. However, a bit south of there,
in the Poteau R. basin, near the towns of Poteau and Heavener, there
are good backwaters adjacent to highways runnng roughly N-S across the
basin. This is a mountainous area, but the elevation is low, and the
Poteau R. valley is more like SE Mississippi embayment than uplands.

If you want to be more certain of finding bowfin, go further south, to
the Little R. basin around Idabel and toward Texas. There, you'll be
in oxbow and swamp environments with expansive flood plains.

Won't you be a bit early for juvenile bowfins, though, unless you are
talking about yearlings?

"Where are we going?" "I don't know, are we there yet?"
