Well, for freshwater fish diversity, all the states mentioned here are
rather low on the list, though some particular inhabitants of each are
really nice. But in defense of California, it has the greatest natural
diversity of any state. S. California has been seriously mucked up,
and lots of people visit most of the other parts, but some of N.
California is still fairly empty, and WOW for natural beauty and just
downright pleasantness.

Where else can you fidn a redwood or a giant Sequoia, either one?
