Hi Steve

I'm not sure where they're native to, but Ramshorn Snails -generally- do not
harm aquatic plants.
Apple snails, and "Mystery" snails, on the other hand, like aquatic plants
better than algae. :)

Have you considered Narcissus Snails? They're very small, and you can
probably get them from anyone with a planted aquarium. They're cone shaped,
and live in the gravel. They're great detrivores, and won't bother plants.
Plus, since they're in the gravel, they keep it stirred up and aerated. At
night, they come out and eat algae from the sides. This is also the best
time to collect them from a friend with a planted tank.
