The biological species concept can only apply to sexually reproducing
populations, since mate compatibility is a part of the definition.
Fossils can only fully fit the typological species definition, though I
think that paleontologists are getting better at understanding
populations than they used to be. And phylogenetic and evolutionary
species definitions can only be applied if one has knowledge of lineage
relationships.
