It is a question that can be only answered for your specific hot water
heater. Apparently some have sacrificial zinc (?) rods that reduce the corrosion of
iron and other metals. If you drain the sludge from your hot water heater
periodically it should be better. I have never seen any bad effects personally,
but some other well-respected aquarists have seen some problems which they
attributed to heavy metals in their hot water.
