Well, here's an update, for whatever it may be worth.

The new rains from the hurricane have filled the pools to overflowing
again, effectively making a big water change in the smaller ones, and
now they are springing back to life just over the past two days. Test
fish ( gambusia ) are doing fine, and microalgae is growing, resulting
in the water turning green again. The algae must have a lot of food
handy, for they're growing like crazy.

The big pools are still dead though, as far as I've been able to tell so
far, with no algal growth and highly distressed test fish. More on this
as I get it. How all this may affect your theories depends on your
theory, I suppose.
