Jan, I had the same problem with keeping other filter feeding fish and by
using tiny pellets of food and allowing to drop from a feeding ring they were
always there when I feed the tank and become quite aggressive. This might not
carry over into paddle fish. But the threadfin shad I grew from about 1/2" to
about 6" one spring and summer did very well with the very fine or fine sized.
Hikari makes a good tiny peleted fish food. I have to admit that if I had live
food available or enough frozen food, the shad might have grown bigger faster.
