Thanks for hashing this thread through. There were a couple of points in the thread where participants tried to self-censor and cut the thread off presumably because they felt that the subject was only narrowly interesting. I would just like to point out that although I didn't follow all the technical details of the statistics involved, the thread was of great value to me because it caused me to think about much more general questions like:

What is biological diversity?
Does it have intrinsic value?
Is there a correlation between diversity and things which I'm sure do have intrinsic value?
If such a correlation exists, is it causative?

I would just like to encourage people to not be afraid to aggressively pursue topics here that they find interesting. Somebody, somewhere, sometime, said something like "If you can't explain to a layman what you're working on, you're not working on anything important". I am just a guy who knows next to nothing about biology but has recently developed an interest in fish. Although I couldn't contribute anything of value to this discussion, I am really glad that I got to lurk on the sidelines and take it all in. I guess my main point is that these types of threads have tons of ancillary effects and I would hope that people would continue to engage in them.
