Do you think this method would work on Packrats? (I have a buddy with a
horrible packrat problem just a few miles from your facility.)

Wonder how long the corn would last before turning in to corn whiskey in the
desert heat?

I suspect that nothing short of a large gopher snake will work! If it doesn't he can drink the corn whiskey and at least he will not care.
