Hi Dave
I am fairly familiar with the NYDEC site, and some of
the upstate DEC people.

I am in upstate NY, due south of Rochester. Not too
far from the Pa line.

I will check out the cornell site today, the others I
have been going over, mainly the NANFA, its a treasure
house of info.

There are actually 3 'NewYorkers' I am interested in
right now, the Lake Sturgeon will be in the spring
unless I find some fingerlings somewhere. Two other
species are the Longear Sunfish, and the Bluebreast
Darter, both threatened. The first two I have enough
knowledge to go directly with, the Darter I will be
doing some research on. I want to work with the Darter
as its native to the area I grew up in, kind of a
sentimental favorite. The other two because also if
support work isnot done they are going to disappear
from the state. The NYDEC doesnt have the resources to
do the necessary support work for any of the
threatened or endangered species, they are oriented
towards stocking and habitat improvement of the sport
fishes.

I have the equipment now to work with the two smaller
species, and by spring will be able to work with the
sturgeon on a small basis outdoors in closed systems.

I would like to hear from anyone who is working with
any of the Darters similar to the Bluebreast Darter. I
would aim towards establishing a working colony of
them.

The Longear Sunfish actually could be one of the
easiest to 'revive' with the simple introduction of
them to sufficient farm ponds with no sunfish in them.
One of the biggest problems with them has been
hybridization with other sunfish species. It shouldnt
be too difficult to establish pure strains in numerous
cooperating farmers ponds. Again, first, need to
establish a breeding colony.

Both the smaller species are from western NY, the
Darter from the headwaters of the Allegany River, and
the Sunfish from the Tonawanda River so, hopefully
come spring I will have the permits to seine a few. I
hope.

If anyone is raising either of these I'd be interested
in a couple trios of each.
