OK, I have to jump in here, I can't help it. I have personally experienced
an attack by a fish out of water. Well, a fish out of tank. I used to
have some hybridized cichlids that were probably C managuense x C carpinte.
When they were only about 3 or 4 inches long, a pair spawned and were
guarding a plaque of eggs on the bottom of a 55 gallon tank I had on the
floor of my bedroom. Of course being curious about the progress, I leaned
over the tank to look in. That male cichlid shot out of the tank and
actually made contact with my nose, much to my surprise and alarm, and
eventual amusment. These hybrids turned out to be incredibly aggressive
and equally infertile. So I ultimately ended up with one big one that grew
to about 8 or 9 inches. I kept this monster in a tank at the office, where
it was an entertaining conversation piece. If anyone approached the tank,
the thing would charge the glass in an attempt to get at them. One of my
more fool hardy and nervous coworkers, liked to tease the fish just to get
a reaction. On one occasion, he opened the cover of the tank and leaned
over to peer in. Not missing a beat, the killer hybrid shot out of the
tank at him and both of them ended up flopping around on the floor. Now
that was a sight!
