The League of Conservation Voters gave McCain a whopping zero on a scale of
0-100 for his conservation efforts. About the only person in our government
with a worse record is Helen Chenowith...

Also, new news on the Alabama sturgeon listing process... the USFWS has
signed an agreement to work with a council of business interests towards
protecting the sturgeon (sounds good, but wait a minute...). This same
council pulled the same maneuver during the last listing go-around; offered
research monies, and then pulled out right after USFWS decided not to list
it. Think about this- this is the same group of businessmen, lawyers, and
politicians that have spent a huge amount of money trying to discredit
science by claiming that it's not a valid species, by conducting personal
attacks against people involved in the process, and by propagandist
literature that suggests that if it's listed all barge traffic on the
Tenn-Tom will come to a screeching halt... and overnight, they're jumping at
the bit to give USFWS money to do research on restoration, with the caveat
that the fish is not officially listed. Yeah, right.

Also, the USFWS biologist who has been leading the sturgeon campaign just
had his house burn to the ground. Coincidence? I've been trying to get
additional information- I've gotten word from two independent sources that
it's under investigation as arson (Jan, have you heard anything to deny or
confirm this?)...

This is the sort of stuff that happens when ESA issues are left up to
Alabamanians. I just wish the Feds would have the guts to make a decision
based on science, rather than politics.

Cheers,
Dave
