I use lava rock in the bio filter for my koi pond. Lots of surface, etc.
Now I wonder if it is adding unintended fertilizer. When Mount Saint Helens
blew a few years back the farmland in Eastern Washington really benefited
(the engines of the cars and farm machinery didn't).
