For freshwater plants I usually use 40 watt vita-lite power twist bulbs. I
have found that depth of the water should be taken into account when lighting
an aquarium. A very deep tank will require more light than a shallow tank. If
you double the depth of a tank the light intensity at the bottom falls off by
a factor of four. In other words if one 40 watt bulb will light the bottom of
12" deep tank to the proper intensity then a 24" inch deep tank would take
4-40 watt bulbs to have the same intensity. Moving the bulbs closer to the
waters surface also increases the intensity by the same factor.
