NANFA-- Hornworts

I am trying to figure out hornworts.
There are two types present in my pond - one is a large, dark green and
the other is a smaller lighter green. I've browsed the web looking at
illustrations but they are confusing. Apparently there are three
species. A big one. A medium sized one and a really diminitive one.
There are also three names floating around - Ceratophyllum demersum -
which is supposed to be the larger species , C. submersum - the medium
and C. echinatum - the smaller or "Spiny Hornwort". Still I am confused
about the genus - especially the two larger forms. Never had or seen the
very small one.

Anyone out there have a handle on hornworts?

Jeff
