Most likely Necturus m. maculosus, the Mudpuppy. Considered uncommon in
the state (MA). The first specimens were found in the Connecticut river
about 1931. These specimens were reported to have been released from
Amherst College. An introduced species in parts of New England (MA, RI,
ME). The range of this species is: St. Lawrence River west to S.E.
Manitoba, south to E. Kansas and N. Alabama through central Pennsylvania
to New York and the Champlain Valley. Absent from the Adirondacks.
(DeGraaf and Rudis, 1983).
