I'd get in contact with The Nature Conservancy to see if they would be interested in allowing you on the property (if this is in fact whom your aquaintance donated/sold the land to). If you had specific mention of ecology you'd like to see, they'd prolly be more than willing to take you out and see it. While the area may be a refuge designated for "birds", TNC protects whole ecosystems, not individuals, and it prolly wouldn't be the best idea to just show up and go looking. "Take" would be a bad bad bad idea :)

Fascinating ecology btw. I'll have to add this one to the list of places to see in the near future :) I've never been up east...
