We have collected sailfin catfishes with double barbels as well. They are
in the minority but not too uncommon. Of three that we collected in Dec,
two had barbels that were bifurcated symmetrically at the tip; the third had
a barbel with multiple branches. I assume these were regenerative
"mistakes" that occurred after minor injury. In contrast, I have seen a lot
of catfishes (blue, channel, flathead) from the Mississippi Delta and a lot
of sturgeon from the Mississippi River and have not seen any with double
barbels.
