Why didn4t I remember this striking example for extiction by
qvercollecting!;-) This it was stated in very first reports about the
extinction. Well, the opponents of pet hobby fire quick from the hip. Much
later it was claimed damming as the true reason.

I am in contact with a commercial fish importer who has started research on
hormone induced breeding in several species (e.g. Synodontis-catfish) to
become independent from imports.

And for overcollecting in general: even the Neon-Tetra which is collected in
numbers of as much as 600 Millions every year doesn4t show any effect from
this in its population density. But there are decreasing collections of
Hypancistrus zebra due to overcollecting. But the fish won4t get extinct by
this anyways as it is a species living in very deep water where even
professional dive-collectors don4t like to get. The Amazone at manaus is
more than 60 m deep. The Rio Xingu were hypancistrus lives nearly as deep.

Still waiting for evidence that collecting of fish or any other cold-blooded
animal has ever lead to extinction.
