Vinegar works wonders on dissolving encrusting coralline algae (calcium
carbonate based) and it's worked fine for the reef tanks I've cleaned up in
the past. If it's really stuborn you probably could try a very dilute
solution of muratic acid. If you do go the muratic acid route, be sure to
use it in an open, ventillated place as muratic acid does fume. Also, be
sure to use long rubber gloves and eye protection of some sort to protect
yourself. Muratic acid can be found at your local hardware store.
