I live in Mobile, but I have never found them locally.

Apparently, there is a break in distribution along the Gulf Coast here.

However, if you go west, you will find them in the Wolf and Pearl River
Mississippi drainage basins.

To the east, they occur starting in the Blackwater River near Milton,
Florida.
