NANFA-- Black Banded Sunfish

Last Saturday I was lucky enough to get four black banded sunfish on our
collecting trip. Today I noticed that one of them had dug a depression in the sand
about 4 to 5" across and is defending it from all comers. He spends most of
his time fanning the depression as though there are eggs in it. I thought all
four were males but since I don't really know how to tell them apart can anyone
give me the details of the breeding behaviors of black bandeds and how to
tell the males from the females?
