Yeah, I keep mudminnows. They do need live or frozen foods. They are
probably one of the few fish I have kept that need a serious cooling down to
get them to spawn. Try dark tannic water ( treated with oak leaves and
peat, or a commercial tonic). Set them out for a couple months so they can
be in cold water during the late or early winter,( females should be really
plump after this, full of eggs) , then put them in a tank with little or no
current with tons of plants, sticks and dead leaves for cover and spawning
media. If you have central muds , they are easy to sex, when in condition
the males will have brilliant blue anal and pelvic fins which are enlarged,
females never have any blue in their fins. Eastern mudminnows are harder to
sex, but some males show some blue cast to the anal fin and an enlargement
of fins. Eastern muds range down to Florida, so the cooling may not be
needed for southern stock fish. Hope this helps,
Ray
