I missed the middle of this discussion. In Michigan round gobies are
illegal to posses. I would have thought this was the same in other =
states.
I have heard that they are now the most common fish in the great lakes. =
At
the Hocking Hills convention in Ohio back in 2001 there was a speaker =
that
stated they had already eliminated greenside darters and sculpins in =
lake
Erie. This is one scary fish what would happen to darters if it gets =
loose
in Tenn. or Alabama. Why would you want to mess with something this
controversial?

Hi Bob,

They are illegal to possess either live or dead in any state where they =
currently occurr. But gobies aren't my point. My beef is about =
communication, how it comes across on this list frequently on complex =
subjects, and how some might communicate more successfully with all =
people. I never would have intended to single out Dave... he kinda did =
it on his own with his choices of metaphor and adjective in his =
anecdote, as cute and innocuous as it might have seemed while typing, =
and how that read back to the reader.=20
=20
Interestingly enough, states with rampant goby invasions are the very =
states with the worst dreissenid (zebra and quagga mussel) infestations =
as well. I might provide some on-topic meat with my post, and pass you =
guys along to:

...which is a reprint of a very interesting paper. Facilitation is =
becoming quite an interest of mine, my focus around filter feeders. =
More specifically, how Unionidae (freshwater mussels) may have =
partitioned the habitat by particle size and density, thus enabling =
other species to fit their niche within, increasing overall diversity. =
And of course, how humans have impacted this balance.
=20
Note: I don't believe this paper is any justification for moving round =
gobies about (if you've made that extrapolation). The law is the law, =
but we've already read that a couple times now ;)
=20
Okay... Back to the crash course learning to take constructive criticsm =
from my peers. =20
