regarding the original question-

I using the kordon breathing bags wrapped in newspaper and packed in a
cardboard box. No air in the bags, and I usually add an ammonia
remover to the water.

I brought home some rio grande cichlids and mexican tetras from Tucson
(caught them in texas, repacked in Tucson) all the way to virginia
this last summer. I usually tie the bags and bring them in at night.
If anything looks like it needs fresh water, I will use
de-chlor/ammonia remover in the hotel room.

I have had really good results with this method over the years/
