I've used alka seltzer in the past and it works great. The fizzing freaks
them out, but they just go to sleep like with MS222 or Clove Oil. Problem
is, as you note, not the most economical way to go about it. It takes a lot
to put a decent sized animal down. Figure 8 tabs to assure non-revival from
a regularly tank-sized centrarchid, for example. That's like $3, and at
many health food stores you could have gotten a whole bottle of clove oil
for $6-$8, and only needed 5 or 6 drops from that bottle, which the 5 or 6
drops can be used again repeatedly.
