DESCRIPTION OF WORK:

Reporting directly to the Education Curator, this position is
responsible for developing and presenting educational programs to the
public and aquarium visitors, and to school groups and special interest
groups. This position will present programs, prepare printed materials,
respond to visitor questions, utilize electronic communication systems,
and will be responsible for creating new programs incorporating a
variety of experiential learning methods including science, arts,
theater, and music. Primary job duties include preparing and giving
engaging, informative public auditorium programs; presenting classroom
experiential learning sessions; facilitating gallery talks using
biofacts and live exhibits for props; preparing and presenting
age-appropriate curriculum specific to school programs; serving as a
resource for teachers and community members; evaluating education
programs for effectiveness; and training and supervising interns,
volunteers, and seasonal education staff. Educators will also be
responsible for handling live animals. This position works as part of
the education team to set goals and program direction and to conduct
program evaluations. This position works cooperatively with other
departments to achieve the overall mission of the Aquarium. Evening,
weekend and holiday work is required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

Excellent written, and oral communication skills. Demonstrated ability
to develop and present public programs. Ability to speak before and
respond to questions from large audiences. Prior experience in
educational program design and assembly. Proficient in computer skills,
word processing skills, and research and organization.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

Graduation from a four-year college or university with a major in
biology, zoology, botany, or other natural science curriculum related to
the area of assignment and one year of experience in a natural science
field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

Prior experience in presenting environmental and experiential education
programs in an informal setting; North Carolina Environmental Education
Certification; prior experience in handling and presenting live animals
in public programs; customer relations and effective communication
trainings.
