Mike, I second Mike Lucas's ID - looks more like
bluespotted (gloriosus) than banded (obesus) sunnie to
me, based on head shape (obesus has blunter snout &
mouth slightly more upturned) and pigment. In NC
obesus has green-gold dashes under the eye that form a
crescent, whereas gloriosus has a few spots under the
eye, not connected into a crescnet. Fish ID books
never mention this color diffrence bcuz it disappears
quickly on preserved fish. i cant see the irridescence
in you photos but if you shine a flashlight on him or
take him out in the sun you can see this easily.

It looks more like a Bluespotted Sunfish to me.
